Blinds

History of Blinds

Blinds are seen throughout the modern world, most extensively in the commercial world, and are also present in many contemporary homes. They provide a practical and elegant form of window covering which gives the user ultimate control over the light being let into their interior. They also provide high levels of privacy. Blinds are available in a range of different styles, from horizontal venetians to fabric and roller blinds that effectively block all light entering a room.

The early Egyptians wove reeds together to form their blinds, and the ancient Chinese chose to use strips of bamboo. It is easy to imagine these early blinds shading a mighty pharaoh or expert craftsman working hard at his trade. When the Persians introduced blinds to Venice, “Venetian” blinds spread like wildfire. In 1769, an Englishman named Edward Bevan was awarded the first patent for Venetian blinds.  Reports indicate blinds were installed in the St. Peters Chapel in Philadelphia Rome in 1761, and throughout history there are many paintings and drawings depicting venetian blinds.

Why Blinds

Window covers are often overlooked when designing a home, but they are a very important element to maintaining comfortable temperatures in a living space. Over the years, blinds have been used to improve the quality of life in homes.

  • Blinds can be pleasing to the eye, with regular horizontal lines to make each window appear uniform when viewed from either inside or outside your home.
  • Blinds offer a variety of colors and style.
  • When carefully designed, blinds offer privacy from neighbours, as well as almost complete blockage of light for the daytime sleeper or those long summer days.
  • Some blinds will help keep the heat in your house in the winter and the sunlight out in the summer, making them a great energy saver.
  • While fabric window treatments are difficult to clean, and if pooled on the floor, difficult to clean around, blinds do not interfere with vacuuming, and with some newer applications of paint, can prevent dust from settling on them.
